Urban Homesteading: Seed Saving 101

Seeds don’t originate in shiny packets on the shelves of Home Depot. They have complex biological histories. So how do we get them? How should you store them? Will they be like the parent plant? Come learn the basics of seed saving on the farm; how to save them, keep them from season to season, and protect the heritage or cross breed. We’ll go through the processes of seasonal seed saving (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, and beans) leaving with some of the farms biology to take home with you.

Instructor: Tom Garcia-Prats is the co-founder of Small Places and Finca Tres Robles. He has spent the majority of his last eight years working on farms throughout the U.S. and Central America developing a passion for farming and a desire to expand and share on his experience and knowledge. Being a Houston native, he feels strongly about farming in his home town, bringing attention to the need and value of agriculture in the Houston area and focusing on how we can creatively address food access issues throughout our city.
